Historical overview
Founded initialy as Banco Mercantil Americano in 1917, following in 1918 as Banco Neerlando Venezolano, and 1926 as Banco Mercantil y Agrícola, this bank issued banknotes until 1940 when the Central Bank began to be the only authorized institute to issue banknotes nationwide. This bank still functioning today as Banco Mercantil, name changed in 1982.
